Trying to boot from 8.10 CD

After booting with the CD inserted I arrive at the screen with the option "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer". After selecting this option I see a bar graph on the monitor that indicates progress. Once that bar graph reaches maximum the screen goes black. The cursor is visible and responsive but otherwise the screen is blank. Waiting doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions?

I'm eager to install ubuntu, but if I can't get it to work from the CD I don't see any point in going for a full install.

Ubuntu 9.04 won't recognise LinuxMint installation CD

Hi, I'd be really grateful for any help that anyone can give. I successfully installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a laptop inherited from a relative, but I now want to load LinuxMint instead. I got hold of an installation CD, but the problem is that when I put it in the drive, Ubuntu just totally fails to recognise what it is. I just get a message saying I've put a blank CD in the drive, and asking what I want to do with it. I know there's nothing wrong with the CD as it works fine on my Windows XP pc, and it's not the drive as Ubuntu quite happily recognises and plays CDs and DVDs. I've been into the bios and made the optical drive the primary boot source, but to no avail. I'm really worried because if I can't use *any* OS installation CDs in the future, then I'm stuck with Ubuntu. I'd really welcome some help, preferably in really basic, step by step plain English as I'm totally new to Linux. Thanks!

How to Install Tuxonice in Ubuntu

TuxOnIce is most easily described as the Linux equivalent of Windows’ hibernate functionality, but better. It saves the contents of memory to disk and powers down. When the computer is started up again, it reloads the contents and the user can continue from where they left off. No documents need to be reloaded or applications reopened and the process is much faster than a normal shutdown and start up.

Hello i am extremely new to all of this greatness.

I have been using Ubuntu for over a year and (believe it or not) have no idea how to use it. The entire time i have had it I have been dealing with no videos, no sound, no instant messenger services... basically anything you name, i can't do. :'(

I was given a computer for free by a guy and he had Linux installed on it....I was kinda glad because I had heard many good things about Ubuntu but have become incredibly frustrated with not being able to do ANYthing.

I need to know how to :install (or check to see if it is already installed) the newest version of Firefox

and how to installed Flash 10

I need STEP BY STEP instructions, because as I already said, I am a computer illiterate.

Hopefully someone will take pity on me and show me to the light...?

Ubuntu 101 on how to get UNR 9.04 working like it should with a few changes

Disclaimer: I am not a Ubuntu GURU the below was a list of fixes I did to fix various problems with my MSI Wind and Ubuntu UNR 9.04. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

When I first installed UNR 9.04 I was impressed, then I started running into problems and I was un-impressed so I decided to see what I could fix as the OS is very fast and screams on my Wind...

Some of the below fixes were discovered in forums with users that had the same problems I was having.

Currently Ubuntu on my Wind runs flawlessly and moves at hyper space speeds.

Ubuntu 101 on how to get UNR 9.04 working like it should with a few changes:

After the install of the Netbook Remix Version 9.04 do the following...

1.Remove Netbook Remix launcher via Synaptic manager it is too buggy at this point, the regular desktop is just fine for my (MSI Wind) faster and less buggy.
2.Remove desktop switcher it is very buggy and will cause gpanel to fail

How to get ath5k working on Jaunty with Compat-wireless and a self-compiled kernel

I used to have some trouble while setting up my Atheros PCI card on Ubuntu Linux 9.04. It worked natively on Ubuntu 8.04, where it was detected as ath0. I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 whereby I noticed my wireless PCI card didn’t work natively anymore. Someone suggested me to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 Jaunty, and I did that immediately. After the system upgrade I noticed again that my wireless device was gone in Ubuntu 9.04. When I ran iwconfig I didn’t see wlan0 or ath0 anymore.
