Can't start ubuntu in grphical mode

I've installed ubuntu 5.04, 5.10 and 6.06 beta on my pc many times already, and each time i install i will get error message "Failed to start the X server (your ghapical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagose the pronblem?" and when i answer YES, i got all the stuff that i don't know on the screen. my pc specification is: HDD 160G with 8partitions , AMD 3800+ x2 64bit, Radeon X700 PCI E 256MB, Gigabit A8N Sli Mother board. Sorry i really novice about linux and really want to install Ubuntu.

Can't start ubuntu in graphical mode

I'm assuming you are getting to a login prompt.
The easiest way to fix this (In my opinion)

1. Login
2. sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
3. type your password
4. Follow the prompts....the defaults should get you up and running

Let me know how it goes:)

postinst error?

I had this same exact error, did a search, found this forum, tried the suggested fix and it worked.  However, like wbmj said above to follow the on screen prompts, I did that; I was selecting how many color bits I wanted, I selected the default 24 bits and it came to this error:xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possible-customised configuration file.and then it brought me to this "command prompt":mike@ubuntu-server:~$I dont know what to type there or how to continue the prompts/installation.  I feel like I am so close.  This is my first time ever playing with Linux and I am excited to learn more.  Any help would be great.  Thanks!

startx

Type:

startx

that will start the X server from the command prompt.
