Dapper Gnome Error

I am relieved that in addition to Ubuntu, I installed Kubuntu. My KDE desktop is more than useful, it is essential as last week's updates damaged my Gnome. Now when I log into Gnome the splash screen appears, does its thing, then the panels try to load. The panels appear, flash eleven times, and then disappear. it leaves me with an empty brown desktop with nothing on it but a mouse cursor. The only control available is ctrl-alt-backspace.  If those keys are pressed while the panels are still flashing, the system returns me to the GDM login screen. If I wait until the panels stop flashing, ctrl-alt-backspace puts me at a login prompt in a shell. I have to then reboot to get back into GDM. Is this part of the reason the release date was moved back?

Getting there

Gnome failsafe terminal
Sudo nautilus
/usr/bin/
poked around and started a window manager
Gnome-panel
gnome-session returned a ton of errors
restarted in gnome, top panel worked, most applets failed

can't login to gnome in ubuntu

I am having this same problem with my Kubuntu 5.10 Breezy. I installed Gnome over Kubuntu through apt-get get a look and feel about gnome without having to uninstall kubuntu as I really like KDE over gnome. I logged in as a regular user and did some fiddling with the panels. I don't know why they putting in 2 different panels. Logged out finally. But, when the next time, I tried loggin in to gnome, I could hear the startup sound, the splash screen and the panel which was appearing for 2-3 seconds then dissappearing for a 4-5 seconds with a knocking sound many times. Then I pressed Control+Alt+Backspace to exit the X-Server,Tried loggin as root, and it worked fine. Maybe something's wrong with that account's setting relative to that of gnome. Does anyone have any solution how to fix it?

Update

I'm still poking around trying to get in. Here is what I get with "gnome-session" using my regular user account:

The same command as root starts everything like normal. As a lowly user all I get is a functional window manager. No panels. No desktop.

I also tried using the gnome-cleanup utility as recommended. Not available. Cool!!! The repository includes an app called gnome-reset. I'll be back with an update shortly.

Solution

Go to user folder, show hidden files, rename .gonf .gconfd gnome gnome2 and gnome2_private, just add a .bak on to them. Log into gnome. Wala!

Okay, it works. Now back to K I go.

Oh well

Looks like I have to do that every time I want to use gnome.

Cured by the Beta release

Flushed the settings cache and works fine now. Thanks for all your help.
