Extremely New to Ubuntu.....small problem.

Hey everyone,

I just installed Ubuntu onto my PC and everything seemed to be working great. Then, when it got time to try and install Java, I attempted to open the "Add/Remove Programs" tab. It opened for a moment, long enough for it to check installed and available applications, then it dissapeared once that process was complete. I tried it a few times and it's still doing the same thing. I also tried to manually activate it from the terminal and I had the same luck. Anyone know what could be causing this and what I could do to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Java Install

I am also new to Ubuntu. I am not sure of the details of your install such as browser but I will tell you my experience. I needed JAVA or JRE to run logmein. Firefox prompted me to install the plugin but notified me there was no automatic install and said that I should install manually. This proved to be difficult due to many linux versions. Then I searched on Google for Ubuntu and Java and came up with many hits that did not help. I then went to Add/Remove programs and found that SUN had JRE versions 5 and 6 so I downloaded the latter and installed. I went back to the logmein page and it still said I did not have JRE. I then went back to Add/Remove programs and installed the Java plugin for Firefox and that worked. I hope this helps, if it does not don't give up. Maybe some Ubuntu experts will step in and answer your question better than I can. I would also like to note I am using Kubuntu with Firefox.
