New to Linux, no idea what to doSubmitted by rmassey on Fri, 2008-04-25 18:38.
Hey, I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop yesterday at the suggestion of some physics grad students I'm working with. One of the grad students did the install for me, so that's alright, but he's not around now and he was saying something about the install only giving you a bare bones of Ubuntu, and having to update things after this. I just got my connection set up here at work, so I'm ready to download any updates, but I'm not sure what or how.Any help or guides that I can be referred to?Thanks. 3 comments | 353 reads

Is Ubuntu the right platform??Submitted by rrees on Sat, 2008-04-05 13:59.
As far as PC's go... I consider myself quite the PowerUser. Not much that I cannot fix or manipulate to meet my desires.I currently work for a "department" that supplies all of its employees with a Dell Latitude D600, with WinXP Pro. Our IT guy has locked out all users from pretty much everything. Several of my cohorts have asked me how to get on the internet (it is currently locked out of their profiles). We all have Sprint Mobile Broadband cards but they are all restricted to a secure VPN used for law enforcement personnel only. My question is this: Can I burn an Ubuntu Live CD that allows the individual to connect via the Sprint S720 (Merlin) Broadband Card? It is a PCMCIA card that does not require login:password. Just a one-time activation that has already been completed for all cards.None of my guys are all that computer savy, so the disc I would need to make would have to all all of the commands to boot, and mount the devices would have to be automated. Total linux beginner/experienced windows userSubmitted by Synkboy on Tue, 2008-03-18 11:36.
Hi guys, sick of using Microsofts over bloated operating systems and want to start using Linux, but first if you would be so kind could you give me a few pointers to get started, by using the specifications of the PC I will be using as a guide. The computer will be an old AMD Athlon XP 1900+, with 768mb of RAM, and an old GeForce 4 card. Now, I have downloaded both Ubuntu and xUbuntu, as well as Wine, Compiz/Beryl, k3b(essential apps I was told), so which operating system would best fit the specification for my older PC?, and would that spec run all of the software mentioned without any problems?, as having seen a few tech demos of Compiz/Beryl it looks very impressive, and as if it would be hard on resources. Also I don't have much knowledge of using command lines to install software etc, but it seems everything I have downloaded thusfar usually has instructions on how to install, is this generally the case?Any help/pointers etc will be most welcome, 2 comments | read more | 525 reads

New to Ubuntu and need help.Submitted by BeCreative on Wed, 2008-02-06 17:53.
So, I just threw ubuntu on an old laptop with no onboard wireless card. I went out and bought a TrendNET USB 2.0 Dongle. I found a driver that says it will work and whatnot but when I try to follow the ReadMe instructions it says I don't have permission to extract files to where I need them to be.Any assistance? 2 comments | 490 reads

Fire that sucker upSubmitted by Black Magix on Wed, 2008-01-30 16:52.
Ok so I've been a windows user for 9 years now. I'm very willing to learn linux and am very excited. I downloaded the 64 bit version of Ubuntu for my 64 bit processor, slammed that 64 in and whent to install it. It shows all my hard drives but instead of showing my Sata Drives in the JBOD array I have it set up in, it shows them being seperate drives which shouldn't happen. I said ok and threw in a quick IDE drive and installed it there. Ubuntu loaded and I entered my password and my username and I was set...except I figured I needed to install drivers seeing as how my video resolution was wrong and my sound was working. I spent about 3 hours messing with nvidia and google trying to figure out how to load and unload X Server (which has something to do with the graphical log in) and install the nvidia drivers I downloaded. I finally get the drivers to install only to find out my monitor isn't support with linux (Viewsonic VX2035WM.) Whatever I can deal with it. I download my drivers for my Sound Blaster X-fi and it tells me I'm not running a 64 bit distro. At this point I'm so frustrated with the system and all the terminal commands I typed in that I'm about to give up. I REALLY want to learn linux and work with it for experience but I have no idea where to start pulling strings to make things work. Half the commands I ran I dont understand what they did I semi figured out sudo and sh but everything I don't understand. I'm basically looking for any kind of help or a book or anything that could help me in my endavor to switch away from microsoft. I know I'd want to game on this machine and something that would be easy to use and modify to look exactly the way I want it. 3 comments | read more | 407 reads

I'm running Ubuntu 7.04, and I need to install a java runtime environment (JRE). I'm a newbie, and I have no idea how to do this. Would one of you gurus out there be willing to post a simple, clear step by step "how-to" that I can follow? I'd really appreciate the help.PV 1 comment | 578 reads

Is there a way to seasrch the forums?Submitted by bryantma on Fri, 2007-11-09 10:45.
Hi, I can see that on the right side of the screen there is a "Ubuntu search engine" option, but it only gave me results from the blogs. I want to be able to search the forums. Is that possible? I reserve the right to ask newbie questions, since I am one. ;-) Martin 2 comments | 476 reads
