Ubuntu running as serverControlled internet accessSubmitted by gabbo_21 on Thu, 2008-08-14 21:23.
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help. I currently have a setup at work in our accommodation blocks to allows users to access internet via wireless. I have users connecting to wifi routers, which currently ends up going through a transparent squid proxy. User's currently pay me for access to service where I will add there MAC access to access points, but this is alot of work. Is there a way I can control access to internet using my ubuntu squid proxy? E.g. user issued a password/key and once entred user has net access, so no key no internet. Any help would be could, and as a newbie to linux the clear it is, the better. 1 comment | 97 reads

Root PasswordSubmitted by vh396001 on Wed, 2008-04-09 02:36.
When I first installed Server version of Ubuntu 7.10 I followed the suggested method and did not set a root password. I created one user and I assumed that user automatically would have the ability to install applications and run administrative tasks. I just logged in as that only user and could not run Gedit command. It tells me to tell my administrator to install it. I tried some commands I found on this site and nothing seem to work. I decided to assign root password so I typed sudo passwd and it asked me to enter my current pw I did. Then I was prompted for a new password I entered a new password. I thought that would mean now I could login as user "root" and enter the new password. It did not work. I put my name and used the new password and I was able to login. Am I doing something wrong? Your help is appreciated. Also, I tried to install the GUI versions to make life easier but don’t seem to work. 2 comments | read more | 1095 reads

I need to power-down the screen from the command line.Submitted by JoJoRaz on Sun, 2007-10-14 20:10.
I'm running Feisty 7.04 Server(no GUI) on a G4 Powerbook (15" Titanium) as the sole OS. I'm administering it with SSH from a WindowsXP machine so I don't need/want the screen live on the Tit. Admittedly, the screen does go blank after a while, but it's still illuminated. How can I power it down completely from the command line? I've seen reference to 'xset' and 'DPMS', but I think they are only for X11, aren't they? I hope this is less painful than my Yellow Pig experience. 1 comment | 543 reads

Hi there, I successfully installed the Ubuntu server edition on a PC of mine on partition hda1. Here's how I partitioned the harddisk: The rest is /usr How can I backup my existing Ubuntu installation into partition hda2? I want to be able to boot from hda2 if the installation in hda1 gets corrupted. Can I use the same /tmp partition for both installations? 3 comments | 5351 reads
