Ubuntu running as server

Trying to get my server setup?

Hi everyone

We recently purchased a dedicated server from 1&1 hosting, we were kind of surprised when all we got was a command prompt but I am willing to work through it.

We are running Ubuntu server 14, i was able to establish a Putty session with the server. I am trying to install a GUI for the server (Yes I am aware the server does not need a GUI for most server tasks) but this server will be running a GUI driven automation software. Honestly it would just make life easier

I did install the KDE desktop however it is not starting, can someone help

How to set a permission of a Sub Directory in root folder of a ubuntu web server

I have a web server running on ubuntu Linux. I want to set a separate permission to a sub directory in a root folder to perticular user so that the same user can edit the specified directory. I want the same user can not edit the other directories of root directories. How can I do this?

getting priniter to print

I am pulling my hair out because I had a windows box printing on a Ububtu computer but the hard drive on the ubuntu crashed and now I can't get it to print again. I've been talking with the local LUG for a month and they can't seem to help any.

I've played with smb.conf (a) but the LUG says that it appears to be proper.
If you look at it you will see that it is the sample smb.conf with a few minor additions. I added the 'opening ports' section under 'global' and I added the 'interfaces' under the 'networking' section. I'm not to sure if that one is right. It says 'interfaces = 192.168.0.2/24 eth0'. Is the '24' right?

Could you help this poor old soul?

Can't install GUI on server from Desktop CD

I have the need for a Ubuntu server with normal server components such as SSH, NFS, and Samba servers, system accounting and status, etc, but also need X components for the in-house application. I figured it would be easier to install the server version then add the desktop rather than install the desktop then add all the missing server bits.

The server is on a secure network with no Internet access.
With the desktop CD in the drive, I have modified /etc/apt/sources.list (both manually and with "sudo apt-cdrom add") so that I have the line:
deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release amd64 (20101007)]/ maverick main restricted
and left the "...Ubuntu-Server 10.10 ..." line commented out.
then done:
sudo apt-get update
-> all good, with the usual Internet errors, BUT
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
fails with "Unable to locate package"
and aptitude only lists 33 new packages from the CD.

Ubuntu Server Installation Advice

I've been using Ubuntu desktop for a while and now want to explore the server side to set up a home network. I have downloaded Maverick. I would like to install LAMP and Tomcat on the same box. The box will be configured for RAID 5. Can I install both Apache and Tomcat on the same box but in their own partitions? Or should I set up virtualization for Maverick as host and install Tomcat as a guest OS? This is new territory for me but I have done a lot of reading about it. The end result is that I want to expand my development skills into web development using PHP and Java so I want a server box I can use as a test platform. Any suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Trying to share folder on ubuntu that can be access by a WinXP machine

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and I am trying to share a folder on a mounted internal drive that was created with NTFS. I've installed and run the NTFS configuration tool on the drive. When I try to share the folder I get the following message:
'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /media/DRV2_VOL1/Quicken Backup as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own.
Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false"
to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this.

I have admin rights to my computer. How do make this modification?

Thank you.

Networking Issue Between Ubuntu PC and Vista Laptop

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my old PC to run all my media from. I have installed and run the latest version of Samba and set my Network workgroup to just be "Workgroup". I have setup folders on both machines to shared, and the Ubuntu PC (UbuntuJim) can find and copy files from the Vista laptop (Jim-LaptopM), but cannot edit anything.

On the other hand, while the Vista Laptop can "see" the Ubuntu PC, whenever I attempt to connect I get the following error:

"UbuntuJim" Is Not Set Up To Establish a Connection on Port "File and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer.

If anyone can assist me with resolving this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. I am a bit new at using Ubuntu and Linux, so it may be a simply error I've overlooked.

Wireless adaptor drivers?

I was going to post this in with my other question about the flash drive, but I figured it'd be easier on all if it were its own question. I have a dell dimension (gag) which I have connected to the internet by way of a linksys wireless G adapter. Problem being, I can't find my CD. my question is, will the drivers I have downloaded that run on my XP drive also work for my Ubuntu drive, or am I gonna have to find new ones?
