How to change the "default application" for a certain filetype

That's easy and exactly where it should be found :)
Right click on the file of the certain filetype, choose properties and it's the "open with" tab.

  •  I recently had the same problem. The Firefox browser was opening the wrong default application for mpg files because I had changed the settings. It took me a while to figure out how to change it back.
  • I had to go to the following folder. It will be different on each computer.     /home/your_login_name/.mozilla/firefox/profile_number.default
  • Save a backup copy of file mimeTypes.rdf.
  • Edit mimeTypes.rdf.
  • Find the file type that is giving you problems and change the helper application that handles it.
  • Then save mimeTypes.rdf and restart Firefox.
