I AM VERY FRUSTRATED!!!!

I have ubuntu 6.06 on a disk. I am currently attempting to install it on my computer. Everything goes fine until its copying files. It gets to 43% and just below the loading bar it says "copying files (900:37 remaining)" and the damn thing stops, you know how I know it stops...the cd-rom stops spinning and the HD LED goes off and everything else freezes, only the mouse will move. THATS IT! I have no other information, nor do I have any way to get any more info cause the thing freezes. So I did my homework. I took out all the pci cards and everything else i don't need, tried again...same thing. I have left the thing on for 3 days thinking maybe it would just take a while, WRONG!! I even tried another disk...nothing. I know not what to do anymore! Any help will be greatly appreciated! Please...im desperate! I am new to linux. HELP ME!!

I had this same problem

I had the same problem with an xubuntu install. Turns out (for me anyway) it was my disc. I put in a kubuntu disc and it went off without a hitch. Try re-DL-ing and burning a new disc. That is the only suggestion I can give... right now. :0)LeeNIX

Disks...

I think it is likely to be the disk as well. I had similar problems with a Dapper Ubuntu disk. Might I suggest trying out Kubuntu, because although the GUI is no where near as nice (personally speaking) the install seems generally to work better. I have no idea why. But it worked for me. Aside from that, if you can order yourself the disk (free from ubuntu) as opposed to burning it (if that's what you've done) everything might work a little better. Anyway, good luck... Joe

Everything is gonna be ok....

What kind of hardware are you installing on?  Have you tried the Alternative CD?  Is is a laptop, or a Desktop?  are you trying to dual boot, or do a fresh install?  have you run this problem by the forum(ubuntuforums.org) with the above information.  Just trying to get a good idea of the situation.  Remember, you can be the best windows user in the world, however, that is not an advantage when using linux.   Glad to see someone else jumping (trying to) on the bandwagon.    A Mathematician is a machine for turning coffee into theorems." -Erdös, Paul Nov. 1992

I'm installing it on a desktop as my primary os. I have ordered the cd from ubuntu, but i'll have to wait 4 weeks to get it. In the mean time i will try the disk on another computer (if i can find one). Also, what is re-DL-ing, and how can i do that? Thanks for the help as well!

Mail

Hey. Email your snailmail name and address and I'll send one to you. It's the least I can to to say thanks to the Ubuntu team for making such a wonderful product.

6.06 LTS for x86, right?

That way you don't have to wait so long.
