Newb

THis is my first time using linux. I am running it on a amd 2600+ system with 1.5gb or memory and a 9800xt. i am in a dos style screen where it asks me to log in. i do so and it comes up with  "striker@striker2:~$ " i am unsure what to do now. i am purly using this pc for the web and messaging since i just built a new  amd x2 PC.

assuming you have the default install of ubuntu 6.06, after you login just type 'startx' and  hit enter, a graphical login screen should then appear. if it doesn't you probably have an issue with your video drivers

this is called a Command Line...striker@striker2 means that you logged in with user: striker on hostname (pc name): striker2.When do you get this window?Did you install some extra stuff?(i want to help you but i need more information)

THe harddrive was completely

THe harddrive was completely Reformatted so nothing is installed except for the OS. I understand the whole host and user thing. I get this window after the pc is turned on and the os is Loading..  I installed the permanent version of Ubuntu 6.06 for 32-bit pc's!

i had that once...

 It came down on it that i didn't plugin my network cable good.. And i had to do a restart....but on-topic:Maybe you have a problem with x11... but i don;t know how to fix it ether :S

I am stupid i downloaded the server version not the desktop version. Thank god for Highspeed Internet!
