Newbie who is having trouble with Synaptic and Add/Remove...

Hi Everyone!

I was sick and tired of windows crashing/blue screening/generally not working so yesterday I installed Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) on my system.

The problem is:
1. I am very new, and not at all familiar with 'the terminal' and the commands
2. I tried to install recommended updates and had some 'broken packages'
3. I read on one of the posts to mark them for 'complete removal' and restart
4. After rebooting I cannot access Add/Remove programs or Synaptic Package Manager!

5. This is the error I get when clicking on Add/Remove:

"Failed to check for installed and available applications

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'."

6. So I click Synaptic and I get this message:

"An error occured - The following setails are provided

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

7. So I go to the terminal and type 'dpkg --configure -a' and it tells me: "E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

8. Also, I tried to type some other commands in the terminal and it told me I had to put in my password, however, when I type it does not register on the screen!

9. So I am very frustrated! I am sure it is a simple fix, something I just do not know due to my limited experience. I am willing to learn and would like to help contribute to making Ubuntu the best OS experience available - perhaps even learning how to do some programing!

Obviously, I would like to address this problem and if there are any other post that are ESSENTIAL/MUST READS for a newbie I would appreciate knowing where they are located.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!

Not too difficult. It's

Not too difficult. It's telling you the answer - but remember to put sudo first! Open a Terminal and input:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

"I had to put in my password, however, when I type it does not register on the screen!"
Your password IS going in. It's just not showing (for security reasons). Just type and Enter...

Wow! Thanks!

Simple and straightforward! That worked! Thanks so much! It really sucks not knowing much about Ubuntu/Linux - do you recommend any books/websites (besides ubuntux) to learn the basics so I dont mess my machine up! :)

THANKS AGAIN!

Reboot? Get rid of that 'you-know-who-OS' behavior right off the bat. Resources for linux? Google ... pressing F1 brings up yelp....tuxmachines.org[http://67.33.45.3/]
