No sound in fresh Ubuntu 8.10 install on a laptop

Hey, all.

I'm a new Linux user, and I just put Ubuntu on my laptop, dual-booted with Vista. My sound works fine in Vista, but I get nothing at all in Ubuntu. I've done some googling and it hasn't fixed my problem, but it's taught me a few of the things you'll ask me to post, at least, so here's what I've come up with:

-----

-None of my volumes are muted or low, confirmed by alsamixer and by my sound settings.

-I have libsdl1.2debian-alsa installed.

-lspci returns:

-I think my system only recognizes one sound device, which is listed as card0, because cat /proc/asound/cards returns:

0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf9ff8000 irq 22

-lsof /dev/snd/* and lsof /dev/dsp both return nothing.

I don't really know what to do about this, being brand new to linux, but if somebody can manage to talk me (real slow) through troubleshooting, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

No sound

Have a look at "Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide" on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

Alright, got to step 3 on

Alright, got to step 3 on that list and this page doesn't list my chipset (ICH9) as being supported. Also, a google search for alsa ich9 returns a whole bunch of people with my problem, so I'm gonna check and see if some of the advice which was offered to them helps me out.

Thanks.

No sound

I followed the instructions from the last post in this thread, but cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec says my model number is "Realtek ALC663." I looked through the ALSA config docs, and there is no entry for my audio device (though there is one for ALC662). Does this mean my device isn't supported by ALSA? If so, what can I do about it?

No sound

Update: It appears from this page that support for my sound card was added with ALSA v. 1.0.17. Is it possible that I have an older version without that support? How do I check?

Broken sound

Well, I updated ALSA to 1.0.18, which gave me some more options in alsamixer. I turned the headphone jack on, and now I have...horribly broken sound. Playing music produces rhythmic popping in my speakers (sounds kind of like what happens if you plug your speakers into your computer when they're already on and at full volume...not a sound which should be coming out of them). I guess this is progress?

Halp.

Solved

Fixed my sound using the advice found here. After updating ALSA to 1.0.18, I added the line

options snd-hda-intel model=h13

to the end of my alsa-base file, and that fixed it.
