Everything works quite well on ubuntu dapper, except I can't get any sound. No sound at start, nor when I want to lisetn to CD or anything.I am running ubuntu on VAIO VGN-B3VP. I have a an Intel 82801DB-ICH4 sound card that works ok on Mandriva Linux 2006.I surfed on the net a bit, not much I admit, but none of the solutions I found actually worked for me.when I type in console:<code>aplay -lI get:**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****card 0: I82801DBICH4 [Intel 82801DB-ICH4], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel 82801DB-ICH4] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0card 0: I82801DBICH4 [Intel 82801DB-ICH4], device 4: Intel ICH - IEC958 [Intel 82801DB-ICH4 - IEC958] Subdevices: 1/1</code>it seems ok for me so far.I have checked Multimedi Systems selector and both i/o are set to ALSA. I also checked alsamixer and everything seems fine. Though I don't have alsaconf but that shouldn't be the problem right?Also checed dmesg, /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog but in none I can't find anything about any audio device or sound device or activity. Under /dev/ I have snd.here's my complete lsmod if it helps:Module Size Used byrfcomm 40216 0l2cap 26244 5 rfcommbluetooth 50020 4 rfcomm,l2capsonypi 23084 0ppdev 9220 0i915 20608 1drm 73236 2 i915speedstep_centrino 8400 1cpufreq_userspace 4696 1cpufreq_stats 5636 0freq_table 4740 2 speedstep_centrino,cpufreq_statscpufreq_powersave 1920 0cpufreq_ondemand 6428 0cpufreq_conservative 7332 0video 16260 0tc1100_wmi 6916 0sony_acpi 5644 0pcc_acpi 12416 0hotkey 11556 0dev_acpi 11140 0container 4608 0button 6672 0acpi_sbs 19980 0battery 9988 1 acpi_sbsac 5252 1 acpi_sbsi2c_acpi_ec 5120 1 acpi_sbsi2c_core 21904 1 i2c_acpi_ecipv6 265728 6nls_utf8 2176 2ntfs 103536 2dm_mod 58936 1af_packet 22920 4md_mod 72532 0sr_mod 16932 0sbp2 24196 0scsi_mod 139496 2 sr_mod,sbp2parport_pc 35780 0lp 11844 0parport 36296 3 ppdev,parport_pc,lppcmcia 40508 0joydev 10048 0yenta_socket 28428 1rsrc_nonstatic 13440 1 yenta_socketpcmcia_core 42640 3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatice100 40580 0mii 5888 1 e100ipw2200 107308 0usbhid 39904 0ieee80211 37064 1 ipw2200ieee80211_crypt 6272 1 ieee80211ieee80211_1_1_13 38216 0ieee80211_1_1_13_crypt 6784 1 ieee80211_1_1_13tsdev 8000 0snd_intel8x0 33692 3snd_ac97_codec 93216 1 snd_intel8x0snd_ac97_bus 2304 1 snd_ac97_codecsnd_pcm_oss 53664 0snd_mixer_oss 18688 1 snd_pcm_osshw_random 5652 0snd_pcm 89864 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_osssnd_timer 25220 2 snd_pcmsnd 55268 10 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timersoundcore 10208 1 sndsnd_page_alloc 10632 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcmpsmouse 36100 0rtc 13492 0shpchp 45632 0pci_hotplug 29236 1 shpchpserio_raw 7300 0intel_agp 22940 1agpgart 34888 3 drm,intel_agpevdev 9856 2ext3 135816 1jbd 58772 1 ext3ide_generic 1536 0ehci_hcd 34184 0ohci1394 35124 0ieee1394 299832 2 sbp2,ohci1394uhci_hcd 33808 0usbcore 130820 4 usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcdide_cd 33028 0cdrom 38560 2 sr_mod,ide_cdide_disk 17664 5piix 11012 1generic 5124 0thermal 13576 0processor 23360 2 speedstep_centrino,thermalfan 4868 0capability 5000 0commoncap 7296 1 capabilityvga16fb 13704 1vgastate 10368 1 vga16fbfbcon 42784 72tileblit 2816 1 fbconfont 8320 1 fbconbitblit 6272 1 fbconsoftcursor 2304 1 bitblitI found this especially interesting:snd 55268 10 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 10208 1 sndeverything seems ok.the funny thing is also when I try:lspci | fgrep 'audio'i got0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)which seems fine too.I really don't know what could be the problem so can anyone give me a tip?tnx
Sound
Here is what I did (and posted to the Ubuntux forum, 2006-01-31). Hope it helps you, too.
With the updates of 1/31/06, Dapper Drake now produces sound on my Gateway 3550GZ. Very cool.
Thanks, update gods.
Addendum: I went back to Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 and, of course lost all sound. So I renewed my struggles. Here is the solution that I posted elsewhere.
*********************
I have the Gateway 3550GZ (same as M210?) and have struggled with the lack of sound for weeks (on Ubuntu 5.10). A thread at on another forum helped immensely. The advice was spot on.
1. Put a CD into the drive and play some music. You can verify it by running Volume Monitor in Sound and Video Applications (Gnome) . I saw activity on the monitor but could not hear any music.
2. Open Volume Control (aka Alsa Mixer --- again, in Sound and Video Applications).
3. Under "File" select "Change Device" to confirm that the selected device is "Intel 82801DB-ICH4 (Alsa Mixer)"
4. Unmute every control in "Playback" and "Capture" and, where possible, put the slider control somewhere in the middle for every output and input.
4. Under "Switches" uncheck "Headphone Jack Sense," "Line Jack Sense," and "External Amplifier."
5. Enjoy the music.
Don't know if this will work on other machines/distros/ALSA versions (Gateway 350GZ, Ubuntu Breezy Badger, ALSA 1.0.9, here) but the crucial element was getting all three toggles turned off. If any of them are "on" --> no sound.
*****************************
I should add that the Gateway uses the AD1981B sound chip. Yours may differ, but this worked for me.
Regards

This works for my vaio VGN-B3XP (82801DB-ICH4) running Dapper. Phew. At first I could not find the 'Switches' option in "Volume Control". I ended up turning everything on in Edit->preferences, and the 'Switches' option appeared.
