New to Linux
Installed Intrepid a couple of weeks ago. Installation nice and easy, but after that things get harder.
Taking a while to get my head round the directroy structure...but getting there.
Problems getting screen resolution right. KVM switch messing that up. Shame you can't 'force' monitor setting you know work.
Some things MUST be done from Terminal. Like setting Workgroup name. Need better GUI's
Like Totem movie player, except that there are no video controls that work, or can be used whilst watching a video...that is a must.
Having trouble getting printing to work properly. (Canon IP4300). Installed the printer using Ubuntus own 'database' but colours are all wrong. Seems black is added to all colours when colour is over 50%. Why?
Learning as I go.. Love/hate at presnet!

Re: directory structure. I know what you mean. This was a huge step for me when adapting fr MS' /windows/system32... (prehaps make this a desktop/background image for a bit?) http://www.pinoytux.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/linux-dir-tree.jpg

Could you be a little more specific? Are you running the player fullscreen mode & don't see the controls @ the bottom of the screen?
re: totem
Instead of Totem you could use smplayer:
sudo apt-get install smplayeror install from Synaptic. In my opinion Smplayer is the most usable media application for Ubuntu.
media
try vlc...will play anything
% sudo apt-get update
% sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc
