Wiping a hard drive

Hi, does anyone know how you go about wiping or formatting a hard drive? I tried typing format c: in a terminal window with no success. I tried putting the drive in my windows machine and formatting it that way, but it didn't show up on the list of hard drives. It would be very nice if someone could help me.
Thanks,
Ernest

A while ago I started using

A while ago I started using "Ultimate Boot CD", it can be downloaded at www.ultimatebootcd.com

It has numerous tools, and those tools include ways to format your hard drive. You just have to boot off the cd instead of the hard drive when you turn on your computer.

Now, why are you wanting to format it?
Is this for an Ubuntu install? If so, you need not worry, you can format the hard drive while installing Ubuntu.

"why are you wanting to format it?"
