wallpaper on ubuntu

Hi
I've finally made the move to Karmic Koala, I'm a Linux Newbie.
My wallpaper doesn't show! I've been searching forums but no one else seems to have this problem. I tried installing AWN but this hasn't helped.

Any ideas?

do you have 2 hard drives?

Hit Alt-F2 and enter

Hit Alt-F2 and enter gconf-editor. Once it opens, navigate to desktop > gnome > background and make sure 'draw_background' is enabled.
