Help in connecting to internet using phone modem.

Therez alot of details to cover [at least a few more than a broadband setup] and to make sure they are done in order. Herez a link from the Ubuntu site about configuring dial-up modems and such. See if this helps.
I'm not currently using dial-up and have dementia so it's near impossible for me to remember everything in guiding you.
But for sure you need to make sure that the hardware is connected properly. Well, before that it might be nice to know if it is a Win or Lin modem. Win modems or software modems are harder to get working than Lin or hardware modems. Is your modem making all the noises it use to do in Windows while connecting with Linux? Did you go through modem setup? I'd be jumping the gun telling you what to do when I don't understand all the details about what you've done and not done. If you have trouble understanding what's on this link dew holler back!
