Upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10

A week ago i installed version 9.04 and it ran absolutely faultlessly. Then I upgraded it to 9.10. The problem is I have to login from seven to ten times before it accepts my user name and password. So far I have been able to login, but it appears to be taking longer. This is my first experience with Linux.

Clean install

A new, clean install is better than an upgrade. In about 8 days from now 10.04 will be released, with many new features. If you can and need to copy your Home to an external USB drive and do a fresh install. If you create a seperate Home partition then you can do a new install and tell the computer to leave the Home alone and not format it - that way you can keep it intact. See e.g. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome or http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-create-a-separate-home-partition-in-ubu...

Agreed, updating between

Agreed, updating between releases has caused me a few issues as well. I find that the upgrade function works well only when upgrading within the same release. New release - New install...best policy IMO.
