Trouble with Oracle VM VirtualBox

I am running ubuntu 9.10 two ways: (a) as the host OS on one machine I will call ``Machine A'' (or just "A"), and (b) as a guest OS (in Oracle VM virtualbox 3.2, upgraded today from sun virtualbox 3.1) on another machine I will call ``Machine B'', (or just "B"). The host OS of Machine B is Win XP Pro. On A, I have installed sun virtualbox, and for a while that worked well. On B, within the guest (ubuntu), I had previously installed sun virtualbox 3.1, but had not yet used it, so I uninstalled it, and then installed the latest Oracle VM virtualbox 3.2. (perhaps I'm crazy, but I would like to try a ``virtual within a virtual''). In both cases, the ``upgraded'' version of virtualbox now does not work under ubuntu 9.10. It fails to start my guest OS in each case. On A, I tried to restart my guest Win XP machine, while on B, I tried to install a Win 3.1 guest. In both cases, I am instructed to install DKMS. I've done so, to no avail. In both cases, there is another command I'm instructed to run using sudo. Here it is, with the result, copied and pasted from a terminal window:

owner@VirtualUbuntu-On-3rd:~$ sudo /etc/init.d//vboxdrv setup

Please advise. And please be kind. I'm an old guy, and a pseudo-newbie. A bit slow on the uptake when it comes to linux, unfortunately...

Virtualbox problem

When I have a problem with an application and this especially applies to VBox, I try launching it from a terminal and I usually get useful information about why the GUI does not run. Often times the new installation baulked and needs to be completed.

Another thing that I try with Vbox is to delete all files and folders except the VDI in the .VirtualBox folder. Then just have to start a new virtual machine and use the old VDI when it asks for a VM hard drive. This is no help though if you can;'t get VirtualBox to run.

Try the terminal approach first in the hopes of getting more info.

Roy

I have no help but very similar problem...

I am using Kubuntu Lucid (10.04) and have been using VirtualBox since version 1.2 (or so) and have never had this problem. I upgraded to 3.2 and loaded up my virtual machines (I have about 20 of them) "MOST" of them started up fine, the others either refused to accept mouse or KB input, others never bring up the login screen, the screen goes blank (black) and the HDD light on the VM stays on constant, even if I let it sit for more than 24 hours, I have to issue a kill -9 to all VBox processes to get it to close, I cannot even shutdown or log off the system. That is really annoying, but the other problem I am having is worse...

ALL my virtual machines not affected by the above issue ARE affected by this one...
I booted them up fine, got the prompt that a new version of guest additions is available, so I selected to install the new additions and then it tells me to reboot (on the windows VM's, I do it anyways on the linux ones, Just in Case), then the VM NEVER reboots, they all get stuck on the blank (black) screen I mentioned above. All I use my computer for is to host VM's and I do everything I need through them, I have a specialized VM for each task and load them up when I need to do something specific, else I use my laptop.

I now have 16 non-functioning Virtual machines, 4 that will not load in 3.2 and the rest that have stopped working since adding guest additions, I even merged all snapshots before running them in the new version and made sure none were in a saved state when I started them up. I have not tried the others. The operating systems involved are "Fedora 12 KDE x64, Fedora 13 LXDE 32bit, Ubuntu 9.04 32bit no GUI (a special version from my sheeva plug for testing, I think it is JEOS, pronounced "juice" for "Just Enough OS"), Ubuntu 9.10 XFCE x64, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows XP x4 (mix of Pro and Corp machines, some are for work) all 32bit, Windows 7 Ulitimate x64, Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and 32bit.

Now, I have created a Fedora 13 XFCE 32bit and a Win XP pro VM using new HDD's and VirtualBox 3.2, the Fedora machine works with no issues, the XP machine crashes everytime I enter my CD key. I am really kinda upset about this as I merged my snapshots just before updating them.

This is the only reference to any real issues when upgrading I have found so far, but I'll keep looking and see if there is any work arounds.
