Please accept my apologies if my question and method is incorrect. I am a first time user and was unable to locate any info as to what might be expected. I am 68 years old and have been using a computer for 35 years so I am very familiar with them. I am new to Linux however. I will attempt to supply the necessary information to make this as easy as possible for you. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
My question... How to install networking (LAN)
I am a long time computer user very familiar with Windows, with some experience on Ubuntu (Gnome). I'm using Kubuntu now as my main system. I have tried the usual sites but they all seem to assume some beginning knowledge and they loose me immediately. I have followed sites and the two books I have, and have hooked up both systems, but I can't seem to get things right. I seriously need your patience and assistance.
I want to hook up either a wireless or wired LAN--I have both systems and cables. I would also like to have the ability to display video and photos on my TV. It is a Samsung and will accept wireless or wired signals.
I have the following networking equipment. You may suggest which you think most appropriate.
Wired: Linksys BEFSR41 router and all the correct cables.
Wireless: Linksys WRT54G broadband router
Linksys WUSB54GC USB Adapter
Linksys 10/100 5 port workgroup switch
Here are my specs:
-I have a multi-boot 32bit machine with Kubuntu 10.10, Win 7, and Win-XP using GRUB 2 as my
My machine uses PCI architecture
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2200 MHz dual core
- 2 GB RAM
- 2 TB drive space (SATA and PATA)
- Gigabyte M61PME-S2 Motherboard
- 1 Gb DDR3 GeForce GT 220 Nvidia and dual 21 inch monitors
- Primary IP Address 169.254.85.254
- Primary MAC Address 00-1F-D0-37-FF-61
- Network Adapter NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (169.254.85.254)
The other machine on the LAN is a Dell 8300.
I hope that is enough to get going and I anxiously await your response.
