Booting from an internal 2nd drive

I downloaded a copy of Ubuntu 13.10 on a second internal empty drive.
The HP has a Pentium4 with plenty of ram. The problem begins with the fact
the 2006 computer is running 2003 xp pro OS & is not genuine so the media player does not work properly. I am trying to make a switch over and no longer use XP.
Like I said it was downloaded to a second drive and opened many files from the way
it came but I can't get it to boot up either in windows formatted D drive or changing the jumper settings on the second drive. All I get is a message it needs a boot file. I have successfully put the same OS version on another PC, so I am not sure if the problem stems from Windows media/sound/non genuine mess or if I needs some other driver...booting mechanism. My DVD Rom reads CDs (no sound) but I am not sure if it burns them. I bought a copy of 13.10 from a local computer store.

Help! I can't get Ubuntu to boot up on my Dell Windows computer!

I have a Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop with Windows 8 installed and have installed Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop AMD64. When I reboot it allows me to choose Ubuntu but will not load.

What can I do?

Thanks

Just saying "Hello"

Hello my new Linux friends. I finally got my Ubuntu loaded onto my notebook, thanks to you. Have a lot to learn in the next few days. Been using several tutorials so far. I still have another PC running Windows 7 (my wife's PC) so I still had access to the internet while I was working on this one. Hope all have a good day...and stay out of the cold.

For Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, you'll need to update your mesa stack using the x-updates PPA.
On the command line (as root), run

apt-add-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-quantal xserver-xorg-lts-quantal libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-quantal
apt-get update
apt-get -y dist-upgrade
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" # verify you have mesia 9.1.6
Then log out and back in, or reboot.

toshiba portege m100 stopped upgrading from ubuntu 12. to 13.

I have a toshiba portege m100 that I couldn't locate a recovery disk for, so I installed the ubuntu 12.3, and it was working fine. Then, I got a message to upgrade to the 13.04 version, and as it was going thru the process, it stopped and I got a message that it couldn't continue the upgrade. Now, when I log into the the OS, my computer will not boot up to let me go online. What should I do, to reinstall the old 12.3 version? When I tried to reinstall the OS with the disk, it doesn't recognize the disk in the drive. Please help me...thnx much.
