Synaptic cannot access repositories

I am unable to install any packages with either the basic add/remove tool or via synaptic, because neither one can communicate properly with the servers.  I think this may be because I am on a network that uses DHCP, but I don't know how to correct the problem.  I can do simple things like access the internet through firefox, so it's not a hardware problem.  Here is the full text of the error message I get:Could not download all repository indexesThe repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper/Release.gpg: The HTTP server sent an invalid reply header [IP: 80]http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper-updates/Release.gpg: The HTTP server sent an invalid reply header [IP: 80]

Simple Package management with Synaptic Package Manager

Synaptic is a graphical user interface (GUI) for managing software packages on Debian-based distributions. If you are using Debian or Ubuntu you will easily find Synaptic in the System Tools menu or in the Administration menu. Synaptic uses the GTK graphic libraries . So, if you are using GNOME on your debian-based distro you will probably have Synaptic installed as well. Synaptic is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command line utility with a GUI front-end based on Gtk+. http://www.debianadmin.com/

Recover Data From a dead hard drive using ddrescue

Like dd, dd_rescue does copy data from one file or block device to another.dd_rescue is a tool to help you to save data from crashed partition. It tries to read and if it fails, it will go on with the next sectors where tools like dd will fail. If the copying process is interrupted by the user it is possible to continue at any position later. It can copy backwards. http://www.debianadmin.com/

Help-Lost connection to internet

Hi all newbie here that needs a little help. I am running unbuntu 6.06LTS (Dapper) on a dell i8200 laptop. Installed to HD and all went well. I have a wireless linksys PCMCIA card that was detected and installed. Internet access was fine. I did a upgrade using the upgrade program in ubuntu. After upgrading i was still able to use and access the internet via firefox and read emails. Fired the computer back up this morning and no internet access and no mail reading. I no longer can access the internet. I noticed in the network settings that i only had lo and eth0. I reinstalled ubuntu hoping to correct the issue, still nothing. Tried using static and put my settings in still nothing. switched back to DHCP still nothing.Any advice.

Internet connect

I have recently installed Ubuntu 6.10 on my laptop. I partitioned my hard drive so as to be able to boot either Linux or Windows and now have both OS' running well on my laptop. I am unable, however, to connect to the internet through Ubuntu because I haven't a clue about configuring my modem. This post, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=201127&highlight=sagem, seems to make a bit of sense to me yet is nowhere near being basic and thus I can't understand fully what I am supposed to do. I am yet to find the basic instructions for setting up an internet connection on any of the Linux forums, web sites etc. What is a 'shell'?, for instance.Do the commands mentioned in the above site have to be entered in to the 'terminal'?I have the necessary Sagem 'eagle-usb' download on the Ubuntu desktop yet have no idea about installing that or anything else on Linux. I have tried to install the drivers etc that comprise the eagle-usb download yet am getting absolutely nowhere. Is everything re downloading installing files etc always so difficult? If so, I am extremely disappointed with the 'user friendly' OS.

Sun Java

I have in the past installed Java on Ubuntu by using "java-package" and basically following the procedure set out for Debian. However, recently i got myself a new laptop and when i've tried to go through the process i found that the packages have changed. Is there a description of installation process. I really need 1.5.Also maybe somebody knows. Now that Sun GPL'ed Java, maybe debian package will follow... q;-)

Ubuntu, Veritas Backup Exec and you...

I've been meaning to post this for about a month now and am just finally finding the time. I had such a time getting this installed that I thought someone migh benefit from my searches.I needed to get our linux servers (running Ubuntu 6.06) into our nightly backups. We had them doing manual copies of certain things to a windows machine and backing up that, but obviously, that's not optimal. The problem is, the backup software we were using (Veritas BackupExec 10) is only supported on Suze and RedHat, so their technical support couldn't help me.Here is a step by step of what needs to be done:

  • #change the port Webmin listens on (because ralus uses 10000) to port 10101
  • nano /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf
  • #create a beoper group and make root a member
  • groupadd beoper
  • adduser root beoper
  • #mount the cdrom:
  • mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom
  • #copy all the installation files to a "ralus" dir in home
  • cp /cdrom/RALUS/linux/pkgs/linux/* ~/ralus/
  • #install rpms:
  • ~/ralus/VRTSralus-10.00.5484-0.i368.rpm
  • ~/ralus/VRTSvxmsa-4.2.1-211.i368.rpm
  • #install the c++ library neede by ralus
  • apt-get install libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2
  • #extract files from the tar archive:
  • tar -xvf ~/ralus/ralus.tar
  • #copy the initialization file:
  • cp ~/ralus/VRTSralus.init /etc/init.d/
  • # make it executable:
  • chmod a+x /etc/init.d/VRTSralus.init
  • # start the remote agent
  • /etc/init.d/VRTSralus.init start
  • # to get packages online
  • http://ubuntu.cs.mtsu.edu/packages/misc/
  • get vrtsralus && vrtsvxmsa

Here are two links I found EXTREMELY helpful
