Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) LAMP Server Setup

In around 15 minutes, the time it takes to install Ubuntu Server Edition, you can have a LAMP (Linux, Apache,MySQL and PHP) server up and ready to go. This feature, exclusive to Ubuntu Server Edition, is available at the time of installation.Instead, you get increased security, reduced time-to-install, and reduced risk of misconfiguration, all of which results in a lower cost of ownership.

The LAMP option means you don’t have to install and integrate each of the four separate LAMP components, a process which can take hours and requires someone who is skilled in the installation and configuration of the individual applications.

Screen problems

I have installed 8.04 on a Sony VAIO desktop with a Gateway screen with a native resolution of 1680x1050.  Everything works well at first, with the screen at the proper resolution. If I reboot the computer, it comes up at 960x600 resolution, and that's the max allowed if I try to change the screen's resolution.  I can't find any way to designate the screen in any hardware setup.  It seems that I was able to do that with Fedora 9, but I can't remember how I did it there.  The 960x600 is impossible to use, and the only way I can get it back to native resolution is to do a complete reinstall.  Then if the computer is shut down for any reason it reverts back to 960x600.  Utter frustration!  Can anyone offer a suggestion?

8.04 to 8.10 upgrade died!

Ok, I was upgrading to 8.10 yesterday, when something happened and my pc froze up entirely during the upgrade.  Now, I have grub telling me that 8.10 is available, and when I try to login, I get to the login screen, do so, then get a white screen of death wherein the only keys that work are the sleep button on my microsoft keyboard, and the ctrl-alt L, and ctrl-alt-backspace.  Then, when I try to use one of the alternate login modes--gnome, terminal, etc.....or reboot into safe mode, I get the same white screen.  Sometimes I get the cursor to change to the little I shape, and then hitting enter causes the little round "thinking cursosr" to happen, but nothing actually happens.  In safe mode where you get the command line, I tried dpkg --configure -a  apt-get install -f  Nothing  apt-get install upgrade  nothing.....says can't resolve the URL's.  apt-get update  apt-get dist-upgrade

Simple Guide How to Upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibix)

This tutorial will explain how to Upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibix) released on the 30th of
October 2008.By default Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will not offer a upgrade to 8.10. This is because the 8.04 LTS version is a long term support release and 8.10 is a regular release. Upgrades from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 are fully supported, of course, and easy to enable.
