UBUNTU in a Virtual PC

I'm a new to Linux today and am installing UBUNTU 6 into a Virtual PC 2004 instance on my laptop so I can learn it in a relatively contained environment.  I thought I could use it as a platform for software development using Ruby on Rails. As a dyed in the wool MS VB/Visual Studio developer this all represents a voyage into the wild beyond. So far so good. Its impressive how much can be done with so little overhead. The other day I had to set up a VStudio 2003 complete installation for someone. It took four hours and the resulting virtual hard disk (.vhd) was 6Gigabytes! It does make you wonder.

Mounting root filesystem... forever

Hi guys,I've been running my first ever Linux server for a couple of months and I went for Ubuntu 6.06. Love it! :DIt's been running fine for a while but it will no longer get past the line that says "mounting root file system" when booting up. I did an install on the HD - is there any way I can repair this maybe by booting off a CD? Any other ideas?Cheers,G.

Secure Debian System Using FireHOL Firewall

FireHOL is a stateful iptables packet filtering firewall configurator. It is abstracted, extensible, easy and powerful. It can handle any kind of firewall, but most importantly, it gives you the means to configure it, the same way you think of it.http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/firehol.htm

Sheepserver

I have tried to get electricsheep up and running to no avail. It ran under Badger, but not Drake.

Under Drake it tries, then fails, to get the first sheep.

If I move sheep from my earlier install into the .sheep folder, it can play those through mplayer, but the mplayer window resizes each time the sheep is renewed.

Partitioning HD

How long does it take for Ubuntu's default partitioning to complete?  I've had the computer on overnight thinking it may take awhile, but I don't think this is right.  Why is partitioning not complete?  I've had a blue screen for hours!! Any help?brandon

Gnome Panels not working or responding

Hi, I installed Ubuntu a week ago. 2 days ago I ran into a major problem. I don't know what I could have done (all I remember is doing Cntl-Alt-Bksp to restart xserver), but sometime later I realized that the default gnome panels were no longer working or responding. The only thing I could do is click the trash icon, and use the keyboard to switch desktops. If I try to click any menu like Applications on the top with my mouse, nothing happens. My desktop icons work fine. Also when I minimize a window, the window does not show up in the bottom panel. Also any keyboard shortcuts I use to access the panels do not work. When I try to restart XServer or go to runlevel 1/2 back to runlevel 5, runlevel 5 will show my desktop void of any panels. The only way to get them back is to reboot my comp., but panels will still not work. <br> Has anyone else run into this problem? If so how can I fix it? I tried deleting ~/.gnome and restarting it, but that didn't work. I also tried killall deskbar-applet and kilall gnome-panel and all that. Also tried un-installing gnome panel and re-installing, but now I just get a "OAFIID: GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet" message
