I am putting together a list of companies that sell pre-installed Linux and no-OS Desktops and Laptops. The list lives here for now: http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/23168/ At the time of this post I counted 59 vendors. Please contribute to the list. I'm looking for vendors that sell "home computers" that are preinstalled with Linux.

I left my laptop running the UBUNTU 6 install last night but it was still churning away when I got in this morning. One good thing about virtual pc's is that you can blow them away and kick off afresh within seconds. Also once you've got a stable installation you can save the vhd file somewhere and then replicate it as many times as you have space for in order to try new config, tools distributions etc without screwing up an important project you might be working on. Today I was curious to see what would happen if I interfered as least as possible (usually a good strategy) so I fired up a vpc with no hard disk configured, put the cd in the drive and let it auto run. Up came the UBUNTU splash screen, and it then counted down something like 30 seconds and began to install itself. For a while the screen had some kind of low res pattern on it but now it's gone black. The disk is whirling away as it was when I came in so I presume it's doing something. It sounds to be reading from the disk and the laptop hard disk is correspondingly busy.
Thsi MY first blog. Just for fun to test this out.Ha ha dont know what to write. Today I want to try out JTR but the tutorial for that is to less. Cant really perform out the testing on my own machine. Too bad.
I'm a new to Linux today and am installing UBUNTU 6 into a Virtual PC 2004 instance on my laptop so I can learn it in a relatively contained environment. I thought I could use it as a platform for software development using Ruby on Rails. As a dyed in the wool MS VB/Visual Studio developer this all represents a voyage into the wild beyond. So far so good. Its impressive how much can be done with so little overhead. The other day I had to set up a VStudio 2003 complete installation for someone. It took four hours and the resulting virtual hard disk (.vhd) was 6Gigabytes! It does make you wonder.
Since yesterday, August 2nd, Ubuntux.org has become 1 year of age! Happy Birthday!
We still need some helping hands to build up this community (moderators, writers of tutorials, and so on). Please let me know, if you are interested.
Hi I was recommended Ubuntu by a friend so I downloaded and started installing it on my PC. Everything was fine till it got to the point where it wanted to partition my hard drive. I asked it to wipe out my current partitions and create new ones automatically... it gives up at about 20% with an error saying "could not read the file system"??? I have no idea whats going. can anyone help?I would appreciate any help on this.thanksNishant

Hi guys,I've been running my first ever Linux server for a couple of months and I went for Ubuntu 6.06. Love it! :DIt's been running fine for a while but it will no longer get past the line that says "mounting root file system" when booting up. I did an install on the HD - is there any way I can repair this maybe by booting off a CD? Any other ideas?Cheers,G.

I have tried to get electricsheep up and running to no avail. It ran under Badger, but not Drake.
Under Drake it tries, then fails, to get the first sheep.
If I move sheep from my earlier install into the .sheep folder, it can play those through mplayer, but the mplayer window resizes each time the sheep is renewed.
