I have recently installed ubuntu 7.04 feisty fawn and I have had problems playing mp3 files. I don't have an internet connection at home. How and where can I dowload mp3 codecs for ubuntu and install them?

I need help upgrading ubuntu without a direct connection to the internet.

My desktop running Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft doesn't have a connection to the internet and I need to install a critical upgrade. I have a laptop set up in it's dock net to it and it is running Windows XP Pro and I do have a wireless connection with internet access with that and I also have a 1GB flash I've been using to transfer files. Is there anyway I can upgrade using this setup?

QoS And Traffic Shaping For VoIP Users Using iproute2 And Asterisk

The quality of my VoIP phone calls suffered whenever I was downloading or uploading anything. This was irritating, especially for those calling me (I heard them better than they heard me). So I poked at Iproute2 and other howtos, especially with regard to VoIP traffic, but I couldn't find anything that worked well. After some playing around, I've found settings that were right for me: consistant VoIP quality, regardless of any activities on the wire. http://www.howtoforge.com/voip_qos_traffic_shaping_iproute2_asterisk

Lost files and configurations

I logged on and then connected two usb drives to use partimage to back up a disk partition from one to the other. I ran partimage as "root" via the terminal and incorrectly sent the image file to the / disk, which filled the disk completely.

The next time I tried to log on the computer didn't seem to take my password. I tried a second account to the same effect, then booted into the safe terminal mode (as root) and assigned a new password to my personal account. When I still couldn't log on to the user account, I again logged on as root, then discovered that the entire / disk was filled. So I deleted the large partimage file (in terminal as root), then could log on as myself.

Here is the problem. Everything from my desktop (I run Gnome) was lost (all files on the desktop before the problem) as was the desktop itself (configurations and desklets). I'd REALLY like to recover some of the files --- I can always re-do the desktop, but I have no clue where to begin or how to start once I get there.

I got my free 7.04 cd in the mail saturday, and I bought a $30 'puter from goodwill. i got the net up on this using linux. I am still learning and installing stuff. Much cheaper than an MS machine with Vista.

Thanks Ubuntu!

Secure Websites Using SSL And Certificates

This article will guide you through the entire process of setting up a secure website using SSL and digital certificates. This guide assumes that you already have a fully functional (and configured) server running Apache, BIND, and OpenSSL. Just as a side note, this guide was written based on a Fedora Core 6 distribution, but should be the same for most other distros out there. http://www.howtoforge.com/secure_websites_using_openssl_and_apache

Don't forget - Microsoft is a convicted criminal organization

Most harmful of all is the message that Microsoft's actions have conveyed to every enterprise with the potential to innovate in the computer industry. Through its conduct toward Netscape, IBM, Compaq, Intel, and others, Microsoft has demonstrated that it will use its prodigious market power and immense profits to harm any firm that insists on pursuing initiatives that could intensify competition against one of Microsoft's core products. Microsoft's past success in hurting such companies and stifling innovation deters investment in technologies and businesses that exhibit the potential to threaten Microsoft. The ultimate result is that some innovations that would truly benefit consumers never occur for the sole reason that they do not coincide with Microsoft's self-interest.

New to Ubuntux

Is there an equipment list for Ubuntux? Or is it pretty much standard?

installation of ubuntu

The installation of ubuntu is a major barrier to its spread and use. This project aims to solve this problem by allowing installation fromwithin Windows using an install.exe file, and eliminatingthe need to partition the hard drive or burn a CD to install. Server Monitoring With munin And monit On Debian Etch

In this article I will describe how you can monitor your Debian Etch server with munin and monit. munin produces nifty little graphics about nearly every aspect of your server (load average, memory usage, CPU usage, MySQL throughput, eth0 traffic, etc.) without much configuration, whereas monit checks the availability of services like Apache, MySQL, Postfix and takes the appropriate action such as a restart if it finds a service is not behaving as expected.

Microsoft makes false and nebulous IP claims (again)

One of the most often convicted organized criminal associations (microsoft) has made false accusations of intellectual property rights violations by the Linux community.Yes I do consider microsoft to be an organized criminal association. Why? Organized: Functioning within a formal structure, as in the coordination and direction of activities. Criminal: Guilty of crime Association: a collection of persons who have joined together for a certain objectNote to shareholders of MSFT shares. SELL!Steve Balmer (The don) has shot his mouth off, yet again, blabbering about someone stole something at the same time they are probably in the middle of yet another lawsuit they will loose (or settle; which means the same thing to me). Maybe it's time for those of us in the Linux community who make our living from Linux, BSD or OpenOffice.org software to file a class action lawsuit to get this crazy monkey-boy, chair throwing narcissistic bozo to shut the f*ck up for a change.
