NEWBIE - Trouble installing updates... HELP!

Hi everyone!

I am new to Ubuntu and am having trouble!

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 and then attempted to update. There were something like 275 updates available!

So after the updater finishes, it says:
"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

So I go into my terminal, type 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' and it gives me this:

foo2@foo2-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of openoffice.org-gnome:
openoffice.org-gnome depends on openoffice.org-core (= 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1); however:
Version of openoffice.org-core on system is 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.
dpkg: error processing openoffice.org-gnome (--configure):

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of openoffice.org-impress:

Where should I start?!?!?!?!?

I am interested in the technical details of linux operating system such as the source codes and how the files are managed and all these kinds of stuffs. I am also interested in command codes, building security systems as well as C++ programming. However, I have completely no idea where I should start???

Basically, I have already got 2 plans:
A) 1)C++ programming (book + compiler)
2)linux operating system (book)
3)installing ubuntu (book + computer)
4)look at source codes (book + ubuntu)
5)learn to program a security system(book + compiler)

B) 1)linux operating system (book)
2)installing ubuntu (book + computer)
3)C++ programming (book + compiler)
4)look at source codes (book + ubuntu)
5)learn to program a security programme (book + compiler)

What do you think? Please recommend any books or websites that would help me through my self-study.

Thank you.

Problems getting Ubuntu to boot...

I recently installed Ubuntu using the Windows based interface, and when I tried rebooting, it didn't give any options to boot into Windows or Ubuntu. I'm currently running the pre-beta-release Windows 7 build 6801. Is it possible that this version of Windows isn't allowing the dual boot? Or may I have done something wrong? Please assist. I was convinced to try it and am eagerly waiting to use Ubuntu.

Newbie who is having trouble with Synaptic and Add/Remove...

Hi Everyone!

I was sick and tired of windows crashing/blue screening/generally not working so yesterday I installed Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) on my system.

The problem is:
1. I am very new, and not at all familiar with 'the terminal' and the commands
2. I tried to install recommended updates and had some 'broken packages'
3. I read on one of the posts to mark them for 'complete removal' and restart
4. After rebooting I cannot access Add/Remove programs or Synaptic Package Manager!

5. This is the error I get when clicking on Add/Remove:

"Failed to check for installed and available applications

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'."

6. So I click Synaptic and I get this message:

newbie searching for help...

Hey guys, I just started using Linux yesterday and I am kind of noob...
I have been using windows for my whole life so there are a few things i need help with.
Right now i am using "ubuntu 8.10" and i am trying to install "Beryl 0.2.1" http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphics/Beryl-19790.shtml

My main question is how do I install it?
Do have to write some stuff in the terminal?
When I extracted the package I found 4 different packages which one do I install and how?

Thanks a lot for helping!

Tip, if you want latest version of a game in ubuntu

After playing several games in ubuntu I have realized the games are slowly updated in the distribution, even though newer verions exists.

Now downloading the game and compiling it yourself, usually lead to other programs that is needed and then you have to compile them too. It can mount up to a large number, an example is compiling freeorion.

So the tip is to use ubuntu packages as much as possible for the mandatory programs/libraries and source for the game itself. Compiling is then usually a matter of, something like this:

tar -xzvf game.tgz
cd game
./configure
make
sudo make install

A problem can be to find the binary file to start the game..but the name can usually be found in the game directory itself or under game directory and bin

Dell Optiplex GX260 Desktop Install issues with Ubuntu 8.10

Is it required for a PC to be connected to the Internet when an Ubuntu installation is being conducted?

Has anyone completed an installation, have the machine reboot, allow for login/password authentication and then see only the desktop and be unable to use the application? What is this state called? What rectifies this condition?

On my PC(listed above) I cannot connect to the Internet with the wireless cards I own and now it seems like my NIC need drivers, so I have no connection. That is why I want to know if internet connectivity is required.

I cannot tell how many times I have reinstalled the OS to have the same results...listed as second issue.

Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions.
