The Perfect Desktop - Part 3: Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft

With the release of Microsoft's new Windows operating system (Vista), more and more people are looking for alternatives to Windows for various reasons. This tutorial is the third in a series of articles where I will show people who are willing to switch to Linux how they can set up a Linux desktop (Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft in this article) that fully replaces their Windows desktop, i.e. that has all software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that runs also on older hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge. http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_ubuntu6.10

- Pues Linux.

"expected NULL handler on exit"

I'm in Australia and I suffer from Ubuntu fog. I've downloaded both versions of the system but run into installation problems:

  • My machine runs Win XP

The boot takes but when it approaches the shell I get "hdc:ide_intr:huh?expected NULL handler on exit". And then I get: Buffer I/Oerror on device hdc , logical block ..." then i get a series of consecutive  numbers each time -- 0-7.I find it diffcult to comprehgend the Ubuntu language and have no idea what to do in res;ponse to this complciation. I'm sure there's a FAQ dealing with this but after touruing  afew other Ubuntu forums I cannot find ANSWERS. I'm hoping this is a forum I can relate to goevn my low geek status. If I can only install the thing I'd be able to learn how to use it....It's telling my machine has a few problems right? And this may mean I'm nbot going to use Ubuntu on it?dave riley

A virus on the cd!

I love Ubuntu

I don't feel like turning back either. (to M$)I love it because:

  1. Wine allows me to play windows apps anyway
  2. Wireless Keyboard battery indicator
  3. Easy to install alot of different packages
  4. It's the only operating system I can *legally* install. (I dont bother messing with buying windows xp)
  5. Live CD/Install combo- I liked being able to use the operating system before it even started installing!
  6. Has software I been using anyway: I always have been using FOSS software on Windows anyway (Firefox, Gaim, Gimp, Open Office.. etc)
  7. My parents are happy with it
  8. Easy ubuntu made it easy to install support for apple and m$ formats as well as flash and java.
  9. Bash is very amazing at what It can do!

Powerbook G3 problems

I recently revived an old Powerbook G3 Pismo (the one with the firewire ports) and decided to install ubuntu on it to play around and check it out. After installation Ubuntu would not properly start - I got a series of messages about GNOME not being able to start, Nautilus aborting and a third which I forget. It turns out that Ubuntu won't start up if there is no date in the computer. My PRAM battery had died and I had found a new one - but the date still hadn't been set. The problem was solved by logging into a terminal session and setting the date - bingo, everything works fine. Just thought this might be helpful to somebody - it stopped me in my tracks for a while.

How To Implement SPF In Postfix

This tutorial shows how to implement SPF (Sender Policy Framework) in a Postfix 2.x installation. The Sender Policy Framework is an open standard specifying a technical method to prevent sender address forgery. There are lots of SPF extensions and patches available for Postfix, but most require that you recompile Postfix. Therefore we will install the postfix-policyd-spf-perl package from openspf.org which is a Perl package and can be implemented in existing Postfix installations (no Postfix compilation required). http://www.howtoforge.com/postfix_spf

Kubuntu 6.06 installer crashes at hardware detection

Hello (k)ubuntuers,I´ve tried to install Kubuntu 6.06 DE (because of LTS) several times but the installer keeps crashing at hardware detection. So I took grub from my old Warty installation and fired the system up!Some steps were not done and I didn´t find an option do restart ubiquity just after the module it tried to probe. Now I have several problems:I have to adjust the console to utf or ISO 8859-15-charset, the timezone and so on.Where do I find this settings and where can I find information about the needed variable strings? The manage groups/users option in KDE is not working because that program/module is missing/etc/shadow is missing. I can´t use kdesu. How can I achieve that passwd also makes a shadow entry? The home directory mount point was created succussfully with uid=1000 but the default user wasn´t created (did it manually).I want to uninstall the nvidia-glx-packages and want to use the nvidia-yyyxx-.sh-files instead.

Install and Configure Auth Shadow on Debian/Ubuntu

Auth Shadow or mod-auth-shadow is a module for apache (and apache2, sort of) that enables authentication against /etc/shadow. The benefits being that any system user with a password can be authenticated for web_dav, subversion or simply an https server. The only other way to do this is with PAM. That method is dangerous because the apache user (www-data in my case) must be able to read /etc/shadow. Obviously, not a good idea. Auth Shadow accomplishes this safely by using a intermediate program called validate. This works because validate can be owned by root but executable by everyone. In the event that your server is compromised through apache, your password file will not be readable. http://www.howtoforge.com/apache_mod_auth_shadow_debian_ubuntu
