I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on WinXp system. When selecting Ubuntu from dual boot screen shot is like this:
GNU CRUB. version 1.98-1ubuntu1
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported, for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Any where else TAB list possible device or file competitions.

So if you allow people to screw with the OS, they will break it, and I did.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on an intel dual core 2.9 Ghz with 8GB ram and 2TB disk. It was running great, and I set about customizing the desktop and installing apps. 4 days later, I was very happy with the entire setup.
I noticed that there was a proprietary driver available for my graphics board. So I had the suggested driver downloaded and installed.
A reboot later, and my monitor says it doesn't support the input frequencies, and there is no desktop display after I log in. The login runs, the desktop does not.
So, just because my video board supports something like 3k x 2k resolution, why does that have to be the default display resolution?
Okay I put in the cd, the first time it loaded installation but took forever to do anything. Finally (when i got back from school) It was loaded and it went to the desktop I saw to icons, Examples and Install. I clicked install and it gave me an error (Not immediately it took 5 minutes to give me the error). Now when i put the cd back in it automatically loads up the desktop and doesnt give me installation options... BUT Now when its acting like its loading up the desktop for the first time to install it just goes to a black screen, Haven't waited another 6 hours for that too load up yet but i dont think its gna work. Anyone got anything? My computers pretty old might not be able to handle the graphical interface. But i got it to work before, Same computer almost worked perfectly.
Cant do anything with the computer without installing ubuntu thinking about going back to windows 2000 :/ I just need it for a server! (Server edition doesn't work)
My system works with WinXP. I am new to linux and created a CD from Ubuntu 10.04 beta Desktop. After selecting Ubuntu from the dual boot screen it comes to a halt at GRUB> What should I do to get to Ubuntu desktop, which I could be able to see and function while the CD is inserted.
I was downloading an app from Ailurus. I decided that I did not want that app, but I would wait for it to end. A light blue dialog box had appeared with a java statement to agree to. I couldn't find a place to agree or a box to tick. But it didn't end or finish up. Sometimes a box like this seems to disappear eventually, but sometimes the dialog box is there an hour or more later. I have just cancelled out the terminal heretofore, but got locked out of synaptic and the files. Usually, just restarting the computer took care of this. But several times, I have so hopelessly messed up my files in this way, or just by mistake, or trying to agree to or get the dialogue box off that I had to re-install the whole of Ubuntu and this took quite some time.
i have ubuntu 10.4 on my intel dual core machine
when i installed ubuntu at the start it was going good but now whenever i boot my machine its starts in terminal mode only when i give exit commond in terminal the machine logs off. help me to resolve matter
Ubuntu Linux, just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS.
To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7201) (7201.winmain_win7ids.090601-1516)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Recently I thought I'd have a go at trying Unity desktop.
I went to Synaptic and checked everything that looked pertinent to do the job and installed the files. Next boot I had a Unity desktop but without function.
I have using Ubuntu desktop more then 3 years. Thire is no problem for me to install dual boot ubuntu 9.10 and windows XP sp3 & Vista.
When Ubuntu10.04 was released I upgrade Ubuntu9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04. After upgrade is completed the system will ask for restart. When i restart display was not comming be cause of my NVIDIA GeForce FX5500 Graphic Card. As this card supports only windows Vista and XP
Ubuntu is a free and open source software and so it will not support NVIDIA Graphic card.
This is where the problem lies
To solve this problem i have don this method.
In my home at present i am using dual boot ubuntu10.04 and windows XP sp3 with NVIDIA GeForce FX5500 Graphic Card
I shows how you can upgrade your Ubuntu 9.10 desktop to Ubuntu 10.04.
Start the Update Manager (System > Administration > Update Manager):
The Update Manager should show that a new distribution release (10.04 LTS) is available. Click the Upgrade button to start the distribution upgrade:
Help! I'm new to Ubuntu so please be kind to me!! Every time I open a window on the desktop, they are always docked to the left hand edge of the screen. Even after I move them over to the center of the desktop, the next time I open them, they are back on the left! Can somebody help me fix this?
I installed Ubuntu to my Flashdrive through Windows 7(-_-) and I ran it using that. When ever i install, I select my keyboard and the installer freezes. I am currently running Ubuntu off of my flashdrive (V 10.04 i think)
I have P4 system in my home and system configuration is

Memory: 1024 MB RAM
Name: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
Chip Type: GeForce FX 5500
DACType: Integrated RAMDAC
Approx Total Memory:256.0MB
Current Display mode: 1024X768(32bit)(60HZ)

and in that system i have SAM SUNG HD321Hj hard disk of 320GB and made three partitions (C D E) in that i have installed xp with sp3 in C & D partitions and in E partition I installed Ubuntu 9.10.
in this month Ubuntu 10.10 was released and i tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. Installation was not done because of NVIDIA Graphic Card, as this card supports only windows vista and xp. Ubuntu is a free and open source software and so it will not support NVIDIA Graphic card. This is where the problem lies
