Ubuntu (10.04) freezes after 'Select Keyboard'

I am currently attempting to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Inspiron 1525. For redundancy's sake, I have attempted to install both AMD64 and i386 from both CD and Flash Drive using InfraRecorder and Universal USB Installer respectively with no change in the freezing issue.

I do have an empty partition set up in EXT3 format, though I tried installing Ubuntu on FAT32 and unpartitioned sections as well, all of which exceeded minimum size requirements.

Again, the issue occurs just after I select my keyboard type during the install process. (No pun intended) I hit 'next' and the cursor makes to load, but idles for longer than six hours with no notable change in state.

Sound Card Not Detected?

I have my computer dual booted with windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. At first, Ubuntu didn't seem to want to use my sound card but I later noticed that it did work with headphones. I later found out that updating my ALSA driver would fix this problem. However, the next day, all of my sound wouldn't work at all. The driver isn't even showing up in the Sounds settings or the GNOME ALSA Mixer. Could someone help me fix this? I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-210US and it has a Realtek HD Audio card (forgot which model number since I no longer can see it on my computer).

Ubuntu Netbook Edition Review

I got a very good conditioned asus eeepc 701 and the first distro of choice after chatting on freenode channel #eeepc was ubuntu netbook edition or une for short (10.04 Lucid). I took the advice and installed away via the instructions from the webpage but there was a glitch.. I ended up having to mount the usb and having to rename the file isolinux.cfg inside of the isolinux directory to syslinux.cfg as well as renaming the folder isolinux to syslinux.

Its all gone HORRIBLY wrong 9.10 wont boot

OH NO! my pc was doing an update and requested a restart and it has now gone badly wrong and I fear its all lost. Please can some one with knowledge help me?

On booting up the pc will run a black screen with white writing on. the last few lines say this:-

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
[ 4.87452] adding 1389580k swap on / dev/sda5.
priority:-1 extents:1 across: 1389508k
/dev/sdal:clean, 193026/49323392 files, 6734687/19661544
blocks (check after next mount)

and there it stops.

The pc only runs Ubuntu 9.10 there isnt any other system on it. is it all dead and gone? if so is there any way I can retrieve files that were on the hard drive? ( the purpose of switching on tonight was ultimately to do a back up of the hard drive!!!)

Thanks for any help.

Installing fonts in Ubuntu

Ubuntu comes with a few fonts, but the list is not really all that exhaustive. Certainly anyone doing any sort of creative work will eventually need to install additional fonts. There are thousands of free fonts available, although you might be mistaken that they are for Windows and MacOS only. This is not the case - installing fonts in Ubuntu is actually quite easy.

Need to restore computer to factory condition

I was trying to run an update on my computer & got caught in a loop. I couldn't even log off. I had to turn it off with the buttons. Now I can't even get to the log in screen. I had this problem once before & someone told me how to get to a screen where I had the option to restore it to factory condition. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I don't know alot about computers ... obviously.
