ClassicMenu Indicator - Notification area applet for the top panel of Unity desktop

ClassicMenu Indicator is a notification area applet (application indicator) for the top panel of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop environment. It provides a simple way to get a classic GNOME-style application menu for those who prefer this over the Unity dash menu. Like the classic GNOME menu, it includes Wine games and applications if you have those installed.

how do I get ubuntu to recognize my external sound card?

I have an internal sound card from a manufacturer not supported by ALSA. So, I got an external USB sound card from a friend. I cannot, however, get the card to even show up as an option on System-Preferences-Sound-Hardware. I also tried pulse audio volume control, also does not show up. When I type "lsusb" in terminal, it confirms that the device is plugged into the USB port, but I can't find anywhere where I can access anything related to the sound card.

Any help is appreciated. New at this.

Thanks

I installed ubuntu 11.04 through winxp, after ubuntu boots up I do not see my mobile broadband connection when I know I have at least three bars. The only way that I found that makes the connect appear is if I boot xp and use vzm to connect to the server then restart the computer and boot ubuntu. Any know why this is and how to fix it.

Wireless not working on brand new HP G6 Intel laptop

I just bought a HP G6 450SA it is a 64bit brand new laptop with an Inter i3 core processor. The wireless works perfectly in windows but when in the latest version Ubuntu it doesn't recognize or connect to any wireless. It doesn't pick up any connections nor does it even recognize the fact that there is a wireless modem.

I've tried re installing Ubuntu and I even installed the elementary OS but have had no luck what so ever. the only way I've been able to connect to the internet is through a hard wire.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Thanks Sam.

Oversized windows

Hello everybody. First time here and a complete Linux newbie since a couple of months ago, but I'm learning fast.

Ubuntu 64 bit, i7 processor, 6GB RAM, 2 hard drives, Linux only, not dual boot.

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere. I'm quite impressed with Linux so far, and won't be going back to $eattle $pyware, but there's this one problem that's driving me nuts and I have yet to find an answer.

Due to failing sight, I use a screen resolution of 800x600, but in my experience MOST windows in Linux are larger than this, in one or both directions, can't be made smaller and often lack scroll bars, as with the Evolution preferences screen for example.

I had hoped this problem would be solved by the upgrade to 11.04, but if anything it's even worse.

11.04 misbehaving after fsck and dpkg all the time

I have two Ubuntu 11.04 installs each on it's own physical hard drive. One of them fails to automatically load xserver upon clicking the resume lettering following doing an fsck and dpkg during boot. Explanation of what I'm doing:
I hold down shift during boot after post to get to a menu that lets me run these items before I boot to repsir snd update/upgrade.
as a consequence after the testing and repair/ restore is done and I click resume I get this message" {instead of a desktop which the other installation affords me following the same procedures.} ["X:user not authorized to run xserver, aborting."]
Then I have to ctrl alt del/reboot to get a desktop gui.
The other disk installation while able to give me a desktop after clicking resume will not automatically shut down the cpu when system is told to shut down. The first mentioned install will auto shut down the cpu tho.
ACPI comes to mind but this situation has got me baffled. Thanx if the there is any help to be had.

can't get 11.04 to start

hey guys,
I am a total noob at using linux so please forgive my ignorance. I made a live cd of ubuntu 11.04 using bit torrent and infra recorder. After booting to the cd, a screen that says "Ubuntu" in large orange letters appears with options such as install ubuntu, try ubuntu, test memory, etc.... When i click on the option to either try ubuntu or install ubuntu, i can hear the cd drive spin for a moment, then it stops and nothing happens. I would just like to know if there is a step I am missing, and i appreciate any help or advice you guys can give me. thanks!

I have a dell d610 laptop with i believe 500 mb of ram. currently i am running windows xp 32 bit with ntfs.

New to linux, after installing with Wubi I have screen flashes

Hello everyone in the Ubuntu community, I always wanted to have a linux OS in one of my computers. Finally I saw the opportunity to install it along with windows 7 using the Wubi. I succesfully installed Ubuntu, and get the logon screen, when I log in I just see the back screen and the cursor nothing else and the screen flashes.

I am using a laptop with a AMD Turion II ultra 2.5Ghz, 4 gig of ram, Ati mobility Radeon HD 4250, Windows 7 home premuim.

I downloaded the ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso and used it with the wubi tool to install the ubuntu.

Is being able to spell English words and use it grammatically correct a requiremnent to learning Linux?

I can spell and usually use proper grammer if I'm not rushed but I'm having trouble learning Linux. I see a number of people who seem to be in the know of Linux but their spelling and grammar offends me to the point that I feel I have to write this.
Whatup with this using "then" for "than" and visa versa in a sentence? Sheesh
