HPLIP Installer 3.11.5 for Ubuntu 11.04 won't accept any characters when asked for Password

HPLIP Installer 3.11.5 for Ubuntu 11.04 won't accept any characters when asked for Password. I am trying to connect my laptop to my HP C3100 printer.bF

I recently upgraded my computer system to include the new A75 fusion system. I used Gigabyte's GA-A75M-UD2H. Everything works fine except the sound. I don't use windows. I've used a lot of distros and the only one that works correctly is Kubuntu 11.10 Alpha2. This is a clean install and no updates. I do not know what will happen down the road. I've contacted tech support three time, and each time have been told to test it using Windose. They don't seem to care that I don't use windose. That is how they left the problem. Needless to say I won't buy gigabyte again. I'm thinking of returning this and going Asus. Just an FYI

Laptop speakers whistling when I connect the jack for earphones

Hi, I have Acer Extensa 5220. After installing Ubuntu, the laptop speakers began to produce a high pitched whistle noise when I connect the jack for earphones or external speakers. Maybe it has something to do muting the speakers when the jack is in - they are mute but they squeal all the time. This problem never occur ed with Windows so it seems to be a software issue.
Can anyone tell help me with this,

new hardware discussion

Heyall, was wondering if anyone has had any experience with new AMD FM1 Motherboard and processor....? I'm wanting/needing to rebuild soon cuz I had one cap. on my 10 YO motherboard explode. No system instability yet but learned with another recent pc loss that caps go one by one and sometimes in groups until it all fails....
Just wondering if Linux will have MB drivers for this arrangement?

ClassicMenu Indicator - Notification area applet for the top panel of Unity desktop

ClassicMenu Indicator is a notification area applet (application indicator) for the top panel of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop environment. It provides a simple way to get a classic GNOME-style application menu for those who prefer this over the Unity dash menu. Like the classic GNOME menu, it includes Wine games and applications if you have those installed.

how do I get ubuntu to recognize my external sound card?

I have an internal sound card from a manufacturer not supported by ALSA. So, I got an external USB sound card from a friend. I cannot, however, get the card to even show up as an option on System-Preferences-Sound-Hardware. I also tried pulse audio volume control, also does not show up. When I type "lsusb" in terminal, it confirms that the device is plugged into the USB port, but I can't find anywhere where I can access anything related to the sound card.

Any help is appreciated. New at this.

Wireless not working on brand new HP G6 Intel laptop

I just bought a HP G6 450SA it is a 64bit brand new laptop with an Inter i3 core processor. The wireless works perfectly in windows but when in the latest version Ubuntu it doesn't recognize or connect to any wireless. It doesn't pick up any connections nor does it even recognize the fact that there is a wireless modem.

I've tried re installing Ubuntu and I even installed the elementary OS but have had no luck what so ever. the only way I've been able to connect to the internet is through a hard wire.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Thanks Sam.

Oversized windows

Hello everybody. First time here and a complete Linux newbie since a couple of months ago, but I'm learning fast.

Ubuntu 64 bit, i7 processor, 6GB RAM, 2 hard drives, Linux only, not dual boot.

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere. I'm quite impressed with Linux so far, and won't be going back to $eattle $pyware, but there's this one problem that's driving me nuts and I have yet to find an answer.

Due to failing sight, I use a screen resolution of 800x600, but in my experience MOST windows in Linux are larger than this, in one or both directions, can't be made smaller and often lack scroll bars, as with the Evolution preferences screen for example.

I had hoped this problem would be solved by the upgrade to 11.04, but if anything it's even worse.

11.04 misbehaving after fsck and dpkg all the time

I have two Ubuntu 11.04 installs each on it's own physical hard drive. One of them fails to automatically load xserver upon clicking the resume lettering following doing an fsck and dpkg during boot. Explanation of what I'm doing:
I hold down shift during boot after post to get to a menu that lets me run these items before I boot to repsir snd update/upgrade.
as a consequence after the testing and repair/ restore is done and I click resume I get this message" {instead of a desktop which the other installation affords me following the same procedures.} ["X:user not authorized to run xserver, aborting."]
Then I have to ctrl alt del/reboot to get a desktop gui.
The other disk installation while able to give me a desktop after clicking resume will not automatically shut down the cpu when system is told to shut down. The first mentioned install will auto shut down the cpu tho.
ACPI comes to mind but this situation has got me baffled. Thanx if the there is any help to be had.
