I am new to Ubantu, I am trying to install VLC media player. First I tried looking that in synaptic but I couldn't locate that, My synaptic is showing 1132 listed packages and 1099 installed. then I tried with command line drizzle@drizzle-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc [sudo] password for drizzle: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? drizzle@drizzle-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Reading state information .. Done E: Couldn't find package vlc Can some one tell what the problem is? I am able to access internet through my mozilla. Thanks in advance

Problem using Synaptic and Apt-get

 1) First make sure that you have the repository enabled. Have a look at e.g. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources or http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#How_to_add_extra_repositories  2) Vlc for me (in the UK) is in gb.archive.ubuntu.com/universe  3) After that try the commands: sudo apt-get update ;then: sudo apt-get upgrade; then: sudo apt-get install vlc

re:Lock

Could not get lock, because synaptic or Add/Remove Programs was open at the same time you're trying to use apt on the command line - or the update manager is running.
