shell scripting

well, i am kind of new to ubuntu shell scripting. I have been writing a password matching script recently and i have faced a problem

i am using the read command, but the problem is when i type the password in the bash, i want it to come like ******* fashion, but its coming in alphanumeric fashion.

Is there any way to get what i want?
