Ubuntu 11.10 updates

Just a beginner with ubuntu 11.10 (on a toshiba tecra 8200)and was frustrated till I found out about using KDE and now I am making head way.
Problem is today it installed about 200 updates and now the mouse button (the same thing as a touch pad on newer models) in the center of the key board doesn't work (this is the only thing wrong so far) but everything works fine with an external mouse pluged in.
Does anyone have advice where to go or what to do to correct this? I can fine the mouse software but it only controls how the external mouse works not the key board button(same thing as the touch pad on newer models).
Thank you everyone for the past help.

init error, laptop wont boot?

hi

I turned my computer on and it comes up with ways to boot and I clicked Ubuntu with linux 2.6.38-13-generic. There was a recovery mode too. Once I clicked its writing come up:

init: udevtrigger main process (93) terminated with status 1
init: udevtrigger post stop process (97) terminated with status 1
init: udevtrigger main process (92) killed by TERM signal
mountall: disconnected from plymouth
init: plymouth-splash main processs (98 ) terminated with status 2
init: plymouth main process (50) killed by SEGV signal

I have no idea what this means and my laptop don't boot. I tried recovery mode but it comes up with similar things. I don't know why this has happened. It can be because I tried upgrading my Ubuntu to 11.0 and I shutdown the laptop before it finished? i would be most grateful if you could help

Both panels acting weird

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. My panels both top and bottom have times when they show solid system colors and other times when they become transparent or partially transparent in the middle allowing desktop to be visible. Is this some kind of bug, worm, or Trojan, etc...?

Webcam problem

I have webcam Genius Eye 312, and i try to get it to work properly on Ubuntu 11.10.

Cheese recognize webcam, but Skype don't, and that is most important, i need it for Skype and Gtalk. How to configure/fix that bug ?

i tried with

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype

- that work in 11.04 but here in 11.10... nope

invalid "getdeb.list.bck" in sources list d

I found that I again had the bug "getdeb.list.bck in sources.list.d". I don't know how to change or remove the files in the sources list. It's not a crucial issue, but it is quite irritating each time you do an update of sources to get in the terminal:Ignoring file 'getdeb.list.bck' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension. I would greatly appreciate any help and suggestions. Thanks.

Help! My laptop is stuck on the start up screen!

I have recently updated ubuntu 10.04 and now when I switch my laptop on, it's stuck on the startup screen which is a purple screen with the ubuntu logo. I can access the terminal but when it asks for my password it won't let me type and keeps saying login failed. I have no start disk and I am panicking as I desperately need a piece of information off my laptop. Any help would be hugely appreciated!!!

Update problems in Natty

Due to heavy rains my connection slowed down. Did this : Software sources--Ubuntu Software--Download from other--select best server. Tests done, server selected, reloaded.

The Problem : Update manager shows the same list of applications I have already installed / updated from my previous server.

It does not make any sense to reinstall all the applications just because I chose a different server.

This tells that Natty or perhaps all Ubuntu distros do not have or make a list of installed applications and their versions.

This is not the sign of a good Operating System.

Do this and post your experiences here.

motherboard

I recently upgraded my computer system to include the new A75 fusion system. I used Gigabyte's GA-A75M-UD2H. Everything works fine except the sound. I don't use windows. I've used a lot of distros and the only one that works correctly is Kubuntu 11.10 Alpha2. This is a clean install and no updates. I do not know what will happen down the road. I've contacted tech support three time, and each time have been told to test it using Windose. They don't seem to care that I don't use windose. That is how they left the problem. Needless to say I won't buy gigabyte again. I'm thinking of returning this and going Asus. Just an FYI

Laptop speakers whistling when I connect the jack for earphones

Hi, I have Acer Extensa 5220. After installing Ubuntu, the laptop speakers began to produce a high pitched whistle noise when I connect the jack for earphones or external speakers. Maybe it has something to do muting the speakers when the jack is in - they are mute but they squeal all the time. This problem never occur ed with Windows so it seems to be a software issue.
Can anyone tell help me with this,
Thanks.
