Common Problem: Wifi

This question has been asked and answered in at least two other places in these forums, so I'm reluctant to raise the issue again despite my lack of success with these solutions.Since I installed Ubuntu 8.0.4 on my Compaq Presario laptop with Broadcom BCM4318 Airforce One card, I've been able to set up wireless internet access. This Page (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=190177) looked promising (despite having been written for Ubuntu 6.06), but I'm unable to find the BCMWL5.sys and .ini drivers it calls for. The question: Has anyone had success with this method? If not, and if you have any advice, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

Firefox Flash plugin: Jumpy video and no sound

Well, I took the Linux plunge today, with the installation of Ubuntu onto my old PC. I'm really pleased with it so far. However, I opted to use the Flash plugin for Firefox. The video is very jumpy and there is no sound. I know that sound is working in the general sense, since I can hear the dings when I send and receive instant messages. Can someone shed some light on this -- or barring that, tell me how to uninstall Flash? Regards,HFZ

Icon for Hard Disk missing?

I noticed that the desktop ICON for my 40GB Hard Disk disappeared after the last round of Hardy updates. Would any of you know how to get it back? Call it simplistic, but being a former Windows user, It was very easy for me to migrate my Windows files over to Linux. When I use the terminal (which I suck at) I see that my disk is properly mounted. I can not see the files under "computer" in Places either. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks...

Can't reinstall gdm & ubuntu-desktop

I am new to Ubuntu, and was successful in loading UBuntu 7.10 onto an old PIII. The only problem was getting my sound card to work. Being a good old Soundblaster 16, I figured there would be no sweat. So far I've been wrong.Using "SoundTroubleshooting" document from the Ubuntu site, I had no succes with "modprobe", so I went to the next step and decided to reinstall the linux-sound-base, etc. So I used terminal and typed away:"sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils"The document warned that this might remove gdm and ubuntu-desktop as well. Sure enough it did, but the document indicated no problem, just use:"sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop"No luck! I took a look at "/etc/apt/sources.list" and only the CD source was not marked as a comment. I used "sudo nano" to change the "source.list" to list all "deb" lines and put my Ubuntu disk into the drive. I then used "apt-get install" again for "gdm" and "ubuntu-desktop". No luck. The computer does not seem to be trying to access the CD drive and I get the following message:

Permissions, access and other problems converting a tar.gz

I have given myself and my group all the permissions available...not a good idea, but what else to do????? Downloaded a tar.gz file to /home/az/downloads. Command ./configure did not work as the bash considered the attempt as an command to drill down to a sub-folder.Tried, in the terminal, sudo aptitude install build-essentials, w/o success; also tried with apt-get, still none.Moved to folder with the file, typed ./configure -- no more success than before.Tried to move, copy, or set up a link to the file to /usr/src where I had successfully created a sub-folder, downloads, but could not do much as I am not the owner of src. So, no joy! All this in the hope of converting the tar.gz to a deb file using the alien command.I am enjoying this attempt to escape the clutches of Big Bad Blue, but XP, might, in the end, present the only sanctuary from my failures.

Ubuntu 7.10 crashes after loading from CD

I ran Ubuntu off a disc last night. Worked perfectly. (UBUNTU FTW! LINUX ROCKS!)
Then today I gave a friend the disc I originally burn't as I knew it worked and wasn't a bad burn. And so I tried ten minutes ago to use my duplicate disc. After loading Linux presents me with a huge cross-hatched colourful screen and freezes. The screen looks different each boot.
So I thought it must have been a bad burn, and so burn't another in Windows. Same error over and over again.
I've tried the safe graphics mode as well, but it just freezes.

My hard-drive is NTFS 74.5 GB, I'm running XP pro SP2, a Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ processor and I think half a gig of ram. I do not have a graphics card.
Also note, as the title says, I'm running it off the cd, not installing it.

I must warn everyone, i have had ubuntu for 1 week or so, and i have been fiddling with java for about 3 days. Heres the problem: I have configured APT to get the extra repos. and even have access to downloading any java/program/whatever i want. I have installed what feels like EVERYTHING that has the word java in it with no success on running java on firefox. I've tried sun-java 5, sun java 6, j2re SE, icedtea... everything, with no success at viewing streaming quotes, spades, or mahjong online. Is it something i must do to firefox? If i goto about:plugins i get to see that GCJ Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea) 1.4 is installed, but no dice with anything. I am so sick of dealing with what seems like such a petty issue, can someone please help me out...

Dial-up issues

Hey all,I'm sure you've all heard this many times previously, but I am very new to Ubuntu and have so far been unsuccessful in trying to make my dial-up modem work.I'm running a dual-boot with Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit version and windows XP. The dial-up works fine with XP, so I will be able to download any necessary updates. I have already been to www.linmodems.org and have tried following the instructions listed there, but just end up becoming more confused than I was to begin with. I have run the scan modem and I have a Lucent/Agere/LSI Mars or Apollo DSP chipset. I'm not sure if I should list anymore details, but let me know if anymore information is needed.I'm also having problems with my wireless card, but as I don't have a broadband connection yet, that can wait until a later time.Any help would be much appreciative!Jarred

Gateway Wireless driver problem

Hello, I have just recently installed Ubuntu on my Gateway MX6959 laptop I love this OS but I'm having a problem, my wireless connection doesn't seem to want to connect for very long. I understand that Intel Pro Set Wireless drivers aren't very well compatable with Ubuntu as of yet. I'm hoping someone could give me instructions on how to overcome this problem.I understand I need to download a new driver made specifically for this, but I don't know where or how to install a new driver on Ubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
