USB drive not listed in computer

Hi Guys, I am running Ubuntu Hardy Heron on my Acer 5672 Laptop. I have a 60GB external USB hard drive plugged into it. The USB drive is not listed in computer. How do i get it to show up so that i can use it? Thanks.
